Ingredients that disrupt your skin and endocrine system and what to use instead.
Admit it, you are totally picturing the Toxic videoâŠBritney Spears in the sheer, sequin body suitâŠyouâre welcome. If not, here ya go:
However, we are actually here to talk about the amount of toxins that we use in our homes and on our bodies. My guess is Britney is wearing about 25 products in the pic above; all toxic. The EWG ran a survey that shows that âthe average adult uses 9 personal care products each day, with 126 unique chemical ingredientsâ. Go read the rest of the results; they are shocking.
The Cliff Notes
I am not going to wax poetic about each ingredient, why you shouldnât use it, and lay on the guilt. We are all busy. So, below are the biggest offenders to your health. If you do nothing else, please remove these from your life asap:
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)
- Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate (SLES)
- Silicones (end in âŠcone when listed)
- Avobenzone or Oxybenzone (in sunscreens)
- Gylcols (there are some sugar-based, more natural ones these days – Caprylyl Glycol being one), I still try to avoid products that contain them)
- Parabens (end in âŠparaben when listed)
It really comes down to this: if you do not know what the words in the ingredient list are [much like I know you are already doing with your food ;o)], do not use it. If you are still using brands like Estee Lauder, Clinique, Banana Boat, Olay, Crest, Dial, Tide, Dove or LâorealâŠyou are most definitely spreading chemicals all over your body.
If you donât want to take my word for it, go to the EWGâs Skin Deep database, type in a product you use and see what the rating is. The database breaks it down by each ingredient and tells you if it is safe/not safe. Is it a perfect database, no – but it is a place to start.
So I Have To Throw Out All My Products?
Honestly, YES!!!! Have you been listening? To quote my, and everyoneâs mom: âitâs for your own good.â So what do you replace it with? Well, that takes a little work and research. Luckily yours truly spends an exorbitant amount of time researching this subject so read on for some handy lists. Side note: this is like buying USA made or organic, it is sometimes more expensive because the product is made with much higher quality ingredients. Much like you are what you eat, you are what you put on your body.
Best Places to Shop For Clean Products
Both of these sites do a lot of the research for you (like Whole Foods before Amazon purchased it, remember those good ole days?). They only stock âcleanâ brands that have passed their standards. Sephora also has a âClean at Sephoraâ designation on products.
Brands Worth Buying
House Cleaners:
- Mrs. Meyers (cleaners)
- Mollyâs Suds (laundry)
Body/Mouth Products:
- Osmia Skincare (bar soap, body oil, body cream)
- Yin & Fang Toothpaste (ATX Based!)/Uncle Harryâs Toothpaste
Skincare:
Make-up:
Sunscreen:
- Le Prunier (a light, daily sunscreen)
- Badger Balm (hands down the cleanest sunscreen you can buy, and it stays on forever – hello beach day, and the only sunscreen that doesnât run in Samâs eyes when heâs on the court)
- Sky and Sol (this one is new to me and I have not tried it, but the ingredient list is impressive if you donât mind tallow)
Shampoo/Conditioner/Hair Products:
- Rahua (to date, the cleanest brand I have come across that also has all the styling products)
Deodorant:
Look for deodorants that contain zinc oxide; it works like a champ! The above are both tallow based. I have not found a vegan, zinc oxide brand yet. Let me know if you do!
